ETS2 console and developer mode

Euro Truck Simulator 2 has a built-in console, the same tool SCS uses to test the game. With two small changes to a settings file you can set the time and weather, slow down or speed up the game, and move your truck. You don't need Cheat Engine or trainers, which often break with game updates and come from risky download sites.

1. Before you start

2. Switch on the console

  1. Open Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2 and find config.cfg. Open it with Notepad.
  2. Find the line uset g_developer "0" and change it to uset g_developer "1".
  3. Find uset g_console "0" and change it to uset g_console "1".
  4. Save the file and start the game. In a game (not the main menu), press the ~ key, the one left of 1 on most keyboards, to open the console. Press it again to close it.

SCS's own modding wiki describes the same two settings. Inside the console, Page Up and Page Down scroll through earlier messages.

3. Useful commands

Type a command and press Enter. These come from SCS's command list. Some commands change between game versions, so if one isn't recognised, it has been renamed or removed.

CommandWhat it does
g_set_time 6Sets the clock to 06:00. Add minutes too: g_set_time 21 30.
g_set_weather 0 fClear weather straight away. g_set_weather 1 f brings rain. Use i instead of f to change gradually.
warp 0.5Runs the game at half speed. warp 2 doubles it, and warp 1 sets it back to normal.
g_disable_beacons 1Turns off flashing strobes and beacon spotlights on AI vehicles (2 also keeps their flares lit steadily, 0 is the default). Helpful if flashing lights bother you.
uset g_traffic 1Traffic density, where 1 is normal. Some traffic mods ask you to keep it at 1, so check their notes before changing it.
screenshotSaves a screenshot to the screenshot folder in Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2.
saveSaves the game immediately.

SCS's command list has no command for money or experience. Changing those means editing your save file, which we don't cover. "Money hack" downloads are best avoided.

4. Moving the camera and your truck

With developer mode on, the 0 key switches to a free camera you can fly around with the mouse and the movement keys. Press 1 to go back to the cab.

The goto command moves that camera, for example goto berlin. Then Ctrl + F9 moves your truck to where the camera is. It's useful if your truck is stuck, but it skips the drive, so a job you're on may count as late or damaged. Save first.

5. Switching it off again

Close the game and set both lines in config.cfg back to "0". Nothing else changes, and your save carries on as normal.

6. Quick questions

The ~ key doesn't open anything.

Check both lines in config.cfg are set to "1" and that you edited the file with the game closed. On some keyboard layouts the console key is a different key in the same place, left of 1.

Does developer mode turn off Steam achievements?

We haven't found an official SCS answer. If achievements matter to you, back up your profile and only use the console on a separate profile.

Is this safer than Cheat Engine?

Yes. The console is part of the game, so there's nothing to download. Cheat tables and trainers are third-party programs that often break after updates and are a common way malware spreads.

Can I change the time zone or day length with the console?

You can set the time, but not make days last longer. For real-length days and nights, use a mod like Actual Day-/Nighttime.

More ways to change how the game plays: see gameplay & physics mods and the realism starter set.
